Addmore Through the Years
The Early Years 1978 - 1985
According to the Toronto Star, Addmore struck gold, turning the
mundane task of buying office furniture into a slightly wacky
experience. The idea was not just to sell office furniture but to
make it exciting.
Starting out from a small dusty warehouse in North Metro Toronto,
Addmore scoured businesses for used desks, chairs, filing cabinets
… anything that was used in an office. The key factors in this
early growth were a keen entrepreneurial spirit, an "off the
wall" attitude towards traditional business concepts and a
complete refusal to accept that retailing can't be fun.
One used purchase still remembered from those days was the
acquisition of everything but the building of the old Toronto Stock
Exchange in 1983 as the TSE moved to their new premises. (Even
though the deal didn't include the building, it did include the
blueprints from 1913.)
The Middle Years 1986 - 1989
Addmore's backbone was Used, but the customers wanted more.
Through the 2nd half of the eighties Addmore evolved and by the end
of the decade we also had a name for New with a special niche carved
out in value priced product. Rentals of office furniture had also
become a significant piece of the picture, you'd be surprised how
often you've seen Addmore rentals show up on movie or TV sets.
Addmore expanded through these years bringing the total number of
stores up to five by 1989, and in that year we moved our head office
to Mississauga. With that many stores and an ambitious expansion
plan we just needed a much larger warehouse and breathing space. By
now it was common to hear the comment, "I see your trucks
everywhere!"
The Nineties
The 1990's have been good years for Addmore. It's been a time for
tighter corporate budgets and many, many companies find our lineup
of products to be just the right mix of excellent design and
usability combined with realistic price points.
And now we've expanded even further afield to eleven stores - who
knows where next! And our customers are everywhere and everybody,
from the Lillihammer Olympics to Bay Street to the home office.
We've come a long way from that dusty warehouse selling used
furniture, but we've never forgotten what makes us tick - great
value, great service, great selection and just plain fun.
